Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich says he’d love to receive the endorsement of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who announced Wednesday that she’s not running herself. The former House speaker told Fox News that he has been trying to reach Palin on the phone to discuss “developing Alaska” but hasn’t been able to reach her yet, Politico reports.

“I think any candidate would like to have her endorsement,” Gingrich said. “But I don’t expect her to jump in in the near future. She is a citizen in her own right, she’s a force in her own right. . . . She has so many followers who really listen to her and pay attention to her.”

Palin will still have an impact on public discussion of policy issues, Gingrich said.

Palin has said that GOP presidential candidates are trying to call her.
