After the 2006 mid-term elections, Rahm Emanuel was hailed as a political genius. Under his leadership, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee helped provide the backing for many Democrats to achieve victory, as the party took the House back from Republican control, Politico reports.

emanuel, dems, defeat, houseNow, Emanuel has just left the White House to run for mayor in Chicago, and many of his star candidates from 2006 are about to exit town too, swept out by the Republican onslaught.

Of the 30 Democrats who took over Republican-occupied seats in 2007, only one, Rep. Joe Courtney of Connecticut, is in a safe position to be re-elected, says star political analyst Charlie Cook.

Of the other 29 seats, Republicans already took back three in the 2008 election, and Democrats are in severe danger in the remaining 26.
