Sen. Dick Durbin says it’s time to bring the troops home from Afghanistan, as the cost in lives is too high and the billions spent are exacerbating America’s fiscal crisis. And the United States should stop military activity in Libya, unless Congress gives its imprimatur, the Illinois Democrat also said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“It’s time to bring the troops home. The president said we would start in the middle of this year and we should, in a dramatic fashion, bringing the troops home,” Durbin said. “We cannot afford — it’s unsustainable — to continue to lose these lives in Afghanistan, and to spend 10 to 12 billion dollars a month in this country.
“We have to set finite goals, and we have to declare when we have reached them that we are coming home and leaving it to the Afghans,” he said.
Durbin was asked about a resolution that was co-opted in the House saying that, if the United States does not leave Libya within15 days, all funds would be cut for the effort. Congress has a constitutional responsibility to declare war if America intends to maintain military activity in Libya, he said.
“In this case, when we make a commitment of military forces, as in Libya, I’ve held every president — Democrat and Republican — accountable that Congress has to step forward and make that decision,” he said. “I think that’s the right thing to do, I’m joining with Sen. Ben Cardin in a resolution to call for that vote.”
