AMES, Iowa (AP) — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is bristling at suggestions that his presidential campaign has been hurt by a number of resignations by his staff.

In a Republican presidential debate in Iowa, Gingrich scolded Fox News Channel anchor Chris Wallace for asking a "gotcha question."

Gingrich says Republicans like Ronald Reagan and John McCain had staff defections and to counter it, he intends to, in his words, "run on ideas."

Aides and advisers to Gingrich resigned en masse in early June and his first campaign finance disclosure report showed he had more than $1 million in debt, raising questions about the viability of his campaign.
