South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint acted as a key supporter of tea-party backed Republicans in last month’s elections, raising concern among some GOP incumbents that he would back tea party challengers against them going forward. But he says that won’t happen, according to a letter obtained by Politico.

demint, gop, incumbants, primariesDeMint promises not to recruit or endorse any primary opponents of Republican incumbents in 2012. And he pledges to raise more than $10 million to beat the Democrats. His decision will please those in the party who say his support of insurgents has damaged GOP unity. But DeMint risks alienating his tea party allies.

The senator also wants to clarify that he didn’t spend money against Republican incumbents this year, as none of the $7.5 million he generated for GOP Senate candidates was spent during the primaries.
