SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A somber-looking Nancy Pelosi has led a moment of silence during a planned event in San Francisco over the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.

Speaking at the annual charitable event Saturday, the San Francisco Democrat described Giffords as a "brilliant and patriotic American."

Giffords was among those shot when an assailant opened fire outside a grocery store as she met with constituents in Tucson. Giffords was badly wounded, and at least five people died.

Pelosi says it is "important to us to acknowledge that today is a very sad day for our country."
