Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said he wants the Washington to stop spending taxpayers’ money to aid college students — one day after President Barack Obama announced plans to ease student-loan debt.
“I do not believe that it is the responsibility of the federal government to help fund a college education,” Cain said at an education forum in New York sponsored by News Corp. and the College Board, the New York Post
Speaking by satellite from Arkansas, Cain said he put himself through college by working multiple jobs, and added: “I don’t believe you can micromanage a good education out of Washington, D.C.”

GOP candidates Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, and Newt Gingrich also criticized Washington’s involvement in higher education on Thursday.
Bachmann said: “My preference would be to see the end of the federal government involvement and to enhance the local schools and the parents’ hands in all of that.”
