President Barack Obama is leading the country as if it were a “banana republic,” GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said today on “Meet the Press.”

“We’re acting like Greece and like Italy, and that’s what people are frustrated with,” Bachmann told host David Gregory. “They want us to act like a First World nation, not like what President Barack Obama is doing. He’s acting like we’re a banana republic.”

The Minnesota congresswoman criticized the president as irresponsible and said his policies are sinking the United States deeper into debt and failing to create jobs.

“That’s all we’re doing right now,” she said on the NBC talk show. “We’re putting our American people more and more in debt.”

On the topic of Iran, Bachmann said “every alternative and option” must be put on the table to prevent the Middle Eastern country from developing a nuclear weapon.

“Iran must never have a nuclear weapon,” she said. “If there’s anything that history has taught us in the last 100 years, it is this: When a mad man speaks, we should listen.”

Gregory tried to pin down Bachmann’s comments during the debate last week about Supreme Court justices whose opinions don’t conform to the Constitution.

“If judges step across the line, there are measures already contained within the Constitution, and Congress needs to utilize those measures in the Constitution,” she said.
