Karl Rove: 'Good Move' for Trump to Visit Hurricane Harvey Damage

President Donald Trump made a good decision to visit sites damaged by Hurricane Harvey, according to Karl Rove, who was President George W. Bush’s former senior adviser.

“I think this is a good move on his part,” Rove said Tuesday on Fox News.

“It helps focus the national attention on it… There’s nothing like being there on the scene to reinforce the necessity of the federal government being supportive of the state and local efforts,” Rove added.

He credited Trump for visiting Austin, the state command center of the efforts, but not going to Houston right away. “He’s being very smart in not going to Houston until at least Saturday. I think that’s very smart, because, look, they are still plucking people off of roofs. They are worried about getting people out of their homes,” Rove said in the interview.

“There are lots of immediate things at hand that a president’s presence in Houston would disrupt. I think that the White House has hit the perfect tone here,” Rove said.

Rove also credited the president’s actions on Harvey in a separate interview Tuesday on Fox Business.

“The president has two responsibilities here: One is to set the right tone, which he has done with some very well-crafted remarks, and by a visit that is very helpful. He’s not going to go to the center of the action, Houston, because that would be disruptive,” Rove noted in the Fox Business interview.
