Republican strategist Karl Rove said that "progressive intolerance" is to blame for the Democrats' recent struggles.

Rove, who was deputy chief of staff and senior adviser during the George W. Bush administration, said that even though Republicans have failed to deliver on promises such as repealing and replacing Obamacare, Democrats still have failed to come together on issues.

"Progressive intolerance was also evident last month after the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, announced the committee would fund pro-life Democratic House candidates," Rove wrote in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

Democratic issues include struggles with race and class, according to an opinion piece by Franklin Foer in The Atlantic.

"Two of the party’s largest concerns — race and class — reside in an increasing state of tension, a tension that will grow as the party turns toward the next presidential election," according to Foer.

The party is also a facing a crisis in fundraising, with Republicans bringing in more than twice as much in the first months of 2017, according to Politico.

Rove noted that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has pushed for Democrats to support a single-payer healthcare system or face losing the support of his following.

"This trend points to a broader problem for Democrats: their lack of credible, unifying positive message," Rove wrote in the Journal.

All Democrats have is opposition to President Donald Trump, Rove wrote.

"That leaves Democrats with a platform that entirely consists of furious resistance to President Trump. Yet their message of obstructionism has been wholly ineffective so far."

The Democrats should be taking their message to middle America, but he predicted that would not happen because "out-of-touch ideologues and radicals have such an iron grip on the party."

President Trump has not been immune from Rove's criticism. In July, he called Trump's criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions "stupid." He made the comment in a Fox Business interview.
