Can I Stop My Hair Loss?

Wednesday, 18 December 2013 10:18 AM EST

Question: Since I entered menopause I have noticed my hair is thinner. Is it a hormonal imbalance and is there anything I can do about it?

Dr. Hibberd
's answer:
Hormonal imbalances are not usually the primary reason for hair loss in menopausal women. More often thinning hair is related to physical hair damage from the salon (from heat or coloring agents), mental or physical stress, or drug or chemotherapy side effects.
Genetics can also be a factor, but is less prominent than in male pattern baldness, which does have a very strong link to testosterone.
You should visit your doctor for testing. Blood tests can identify potential causes and you may be offered a prescription for a treatment — such as topical Minoxidil — to help slow your hair loss.
