Time to Get Tough on Bullying

There is no need to search for answers in the case of Phoebe Prince, the 15-year-old Irish immigrant from South Hadley, Mass., who killed herself after incessant bullying by her peers. Rather, there is only time to act.

Phoebe was threatened, assaulted, and harassed daily by a mob of tormentors, driving her to suicide while her teachers and school officials failed to protect her. Prosecutors have charged nine teenagers in Phoebe's death.

The bullies allegedly taunted her with "Irish whore" and, in at least one instance, threw a bottle at Phoebe as she walked home from school. One story has a group of teens ganging up on Phoebe in the school library, where they called her names and blocked the door to prevent her from leaving. Hours later, Phoebe killed herself.

While my encounters didn't reach the level of torment Phoebe experienced, I was violently bullied by a gang of girls when I was just 14.
