Like every year, 2011 brought the good, the bad, and the downright ugly when it comes to memorable moments. From politics to sports, from media meltdowns to military acts of honor, the past twelve months have captivated us with the current events that defined them. Here are the biggest stories of the past year.

The capture of Osama bin Laden — Despite the increased and seemingly incessant fighting between political parties this past year, there was one major event that both could agree was a huge coup for the United States, the war on terror and freedom lovers everywhere: the Navy SEAL team that took out the world’s most wanted man, Osama bin Laden. SEAL Team Six — the most elite and sophisticated of them all, took out the evil mastermind in a complex in Pakistan in May — and, just in time for the 10th anniversary of 9/11, finally brought him to justice, providing some peace to the families of the victims.
