MEXICO CITY — Mexican president-elect Enrique Pena Nieto will meet with President Barack Obama this month during a tour of the United States and Canada, his spokesman said Thursday.

The incoming Mexican leader will travel to Washington on November 27 and head to Ottawa the next day to hold talks with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Pena Nieto, who congratulated Obama for his re-election this week, takes office December 1, marking the return to power of the old ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party after a 12-year absence.

Mexico, Canada, and The United States are part of the North American Free Trade Agreement, also known as NAFTA.

The United States is providing equipment and law enforcement training to Mexico under the $1.6 billion Merida Initiative, a program aimed at combating drug trafficking.
