Brazil's Temer Hurries Defense against Corruption Charge

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian President Michel Temer has quickly presented to lawmakers his legal defense against corruption allegations in a move seen as a bid to avoid being suspended from office and put on trial.

Temer's lawyer submitted the defense Wednesday, the second day of congressional commission proceedings to consider the matter. That was eight days ahead of deadline.

Allies of the embattled president want a quick vote on the issue in hopes of putting an end to the political uncertainty this month.

Temer's adversaries favor a more drawn-out process with ample time for any more damaging information to emerge, figuring it improves their prospects of winning over votes against the president.

Brazil's top prosecutor accuses Temer of accepting bribes from businesspeople in exchange for political favors. He denies the allegations.
