Honduras Police in Internal Dispute Over Department Cleanup

Thursday, 25 October 2012 03:25 PM EDT

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Honduran National Police Chief Juan Carlos Bonilla says some members of his ranks are planning a confrontation over a list of officers who were dismissed in efforts to clean up the corrupt department.

Bonilla says he will deal with any attempts to disrupt police work with every means under the law.

Bonilla told Radio HRN late Wednesday that he has information that officers are organizing to take action.

One top police official confirmed on Thursday that there is "enormous discontent" among the ranks, and at least 30 officers have been meeting for several weeks.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. He says the officers first plan to ask President Porfirio Lobo to dismiss Bonilla for "irregularities and crimes."
