Two Colombian Rebels Killed in Clashes with Army

Friday, 13 December 2013 09:20 AM EST

BOGOTA — Two FARC rebel fighters were killed and two others injured during clashes with Colombian soldiers, the army said Thursday.

The skirmish took place in a densely forested region of Colombia's western Choco region, just days after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia announced a unilateral ceasefire due to get underway later this month.

The army said it confiscated various rebel weapons, including rifles and grenade launchers.

FARC rebels have participated for more than a year in ongoing peace talks with the government in a bid to bring decades of civil war to an end.

The rebels have warned, however, that continued attacks by the Colombian government -- which has not reciprocated by declaring its own truce — could lead them to abandon their ceasefire.

The truce is due to begin Sunday.

Colombia's government has resisted any reciprocal cease-fire until a permanent peace deal is brokered, saying such a move would give the FARC a strategic advantage.
