Brazilian police say they have captured members of a human trafficking ring that dispatched prostitutes to South Africa, Angola, and some European countries,
Standard Digital News reported.
Five people have been arrested thus far, and police are searching for additional suspects.
Brazilian police sources said the trafficking ring, which has operated since 2007, handled close to $45 million over the past six years,
according to the BBC.
Authorities said the women involved — some of whom were reportedly models and television actresses — were promised between $10,000 and $100,000 a week, but the payments frequently never came.
As many as 90 women a year were allegedly procured by the trafficking ring to provide sexual favors to politicians and businessmen.
There are reports that the women were offered a useless drug cocktail to “combat AIDS” and were forced to engage in sexual activity without condoms.
