Brazil's Foreign Minister Resigns Amid Tension

Monday, 26 August 2013 07:50 PM EDT

Brazil's foreign minister has resigned following an embarrassing diplomatic maneuver involving neighboring Bolivia. A new foreign minister has already been named.

Antonio Patriota resigned Monday evening after a meeting with President Dilma Rousseff in Brasilia.

A terse, two-paragraph statement from the president's office says the new foreign minister is Luiz Alberto Figueiredo. Most recently he was Brazil's top diplomat at the United Nations.

A spokeswoman for the presidency says Patriota will now head to New York to take that spot at the U.N.

Patriota's resignation comes a day after a Brazilian diplomat spirited into the country a Bolivian opposition senator who had been holed up in the Brazilian Embassy in La Paz for more than a year.
