Saudi-led Coalition Announces 5-day Pause in Yemen Attacks

Saturday, 25 July 2015 11:29 AM EDT

CAIRO (AP) — The Saudi-led coalition says it will start a five-day humanitarian pause in Yemen on Sunday at one minute before midnight.

The statement, carried on Saudi state media Saturday, says the pause came at the request of embattled Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to Saudi's King Salman.

It says the coalition will cease military operations, but that it will respond should Shiite Houthi rebels or their allies conduct any military actions or movements.

The previous humanitarian pause, which was announced earlier this month and was expected to last until the end of the holy month of Ramada, never truly took hold as parties to the conflict traded accusations.

The Saudi-led coalition launched the airstrike campaign in March against the Houthis, who seized the capital, Sanaa, and other cities.
