Prosecutors: Kenya Not Cooperating with ICC

Tuesday, 07 October 2014 06:23 AM EDT

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — International Criminal Court prosecutors say Kenya is refusing to comply with repeated requests for information that could form evidence against the country's president, who is charged with instigating deadly postelection violence in 2007-2008.

Prosecution attorney Benjamin Gumpert told a hearing Tuesday that prosecutors and Kenyan authorities have reached a deadlock in efforts to gather potential evidence against President Uhuru Kenyatta such as phone records and tax returns.

Kenya's attorney general says the government cannot provide more information without more detailed requests.

The comments came at a status conference on the day Kenyatta's crimes against humanity trial was to have started at the Hague-based court. The trial has been postponed twice because prosecutors say they do not yet have enough evidence.

Kenyatta, who insists he is innocent, was not in court.
