Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) -- The evacuation of the Cha das Caldeiras community on the island of Fogo in Cape Verde is yet to be completed with 70 people still to be moved, the country’s interior ministry said.
No deaths or injuries have been reported, a spokeswoman said, declining to be identified in line with the ministry’s policy.
The Pico do Fogo volcano began erupting for the first time since 1995 yesterday prompting the government to order an evaucation, Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves said on the government’s official website yesterday. The community has 700 to 1,000 members, according to the European Commission.
Cape Verde is an archipelago off the west coast of Africa with a population of 531,000 people. It was under Portuguese control between 1587 and 1975, when it won independence.
