Many of the 10,000 Turkish troops being hailed after a failed military coup against President Recep Erdogan are being hogtied, starved and raped, according to a report in the U.K. Mirror.

Amnesty International says it has "credible evidence" that police are holding the soliders in stress positions for up to 48 hours and denying them food, water and medical treatment, the Mirror reports.

Some have faced beatings, torture and rape.

"Reports of abuse including beatings and rape in detention are extremely alarming, especially given the scale of detentions that we have seen in the past week," said John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International’s Europe director. "Despite chilling images and videos of torture that have been widely broadcast across the country, the government has remained conspicuously silent on the abuse."

One person interviewed at Ankara Police Headquarters sports hall reported seeing a detainee that appeared to have been beaten who could not stand up or focus his eyes who ended up losing consciousness.

The person told Amnesty lawyers he heard a police doctor say, "Let him die. We will say he came to us dead."
