Spain is returning rapid coronavirus tests it bought from China, because they are failing to consistently identify positive cases, according to Business Insider.
Spain is the worst-hit country in Europe after Italy, has more than 56,197 confirmed cases and has suffered more than 4,145 fatalities, the second-most in the world after Italy and more than China, where the pandemic started.
The China tests were correctly confirming coronavirus cases only 30% of the time, microbiologists told Spanish newspaper El País.
The high failure rate has led to Spanish health authorities to reject using the tests and the health-emergency coordination center ordered them returned to Chinese company Bioeasy.
The private company did not have a license by China to sell the products and China was not donating them as a country.
Rapid tests are generally going to have a lower success rate in detecting the virus, but the 30% rate is well below the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standard of 80% to be viable, according to the report.
