Coronavirus cases in Spain have skyrocketed in Spain with more than 11,700 infected and 533 dead from COVID-19, making it the second-most infected country in Europe after Italy, BBC News reports.

China remains the most-infected country worldwide, followed by Italy, Iran, Spain, South Korea, Germany, France, and the United States, as of Tuesday.

Spain surpassed South Korea on Monday after recording a massive jump in cases over the weekend, going from 2,965 cases on Friday to 11,748 on Tuesday. Most of Spain's coronavirus cases are located in the Madrid area, which has 4,871, with the second-most located in Catalonia region, with 1,394. China currently has 81,058 cases, according to BBC News.

Italy, which has more than 31,500 cases, instituted a lockdown last week in an attempt to slow the spread of the disease. Spain has responded to the outbreak by declaring a state of emergency, declaring a national lockdown, seizing control of all private hospitals and requisitioning face masks, coronavirus tests, and other materials, according to Fox News.

"The majority of the Spanish population wants to overcome this virus as soon as possible, so I'm convinced the majority will comply," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said, declaring the state of emergency Saturday, according to The New York Times.
