Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday he welcomed what he saw as a less hawkish Western position on Ukraine and agreed with statements about the need to solve the conflict via talks.

Speaking after talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Putin told a briefing that in order for such talks to happen, Ukraine needed to scrap a decree banning any negotiations with Moscow.
