JOHANNESBURG — Former South African President and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela continues to get better but is still in serious condition as he recovers from a lung infection, President Jacob Zuma said on Sunday.

"Over the last two days, although he remains serious, his doctors have stated that his improvement has been sustained," Zuma said. Mandela. The 94-year-old former president was admitted to the hospital more than a week ago for a pulmonary condition that has plagued him for years.

Zuma was addressing a gathering for Youth Day in eMadadeni in the KwaZulu-Natal province in remembrance of the 1976 Soweto youth uprisings against apartheid.
