Peru Court Overturns Pardon of Ex-leader Fujimori

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peru's Supreme Court has overturned a medical pardon for former strongman Alberto Fujimori and ordered he be returned to jail.

Former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski pardoned Fujimori on humanitarian grounds last Christmas Eve in what many saw as an attempt to stave off impeachment by courting favor with Fujimori's allies in Congress.

But the high court ruled Wednesday the pardon was unlawful. Magistrates immediately ordered the 80-year-old Fujimori be captured so he can serve out the remainder of a 25-year sentence for his role in the killing of 25 people during his decade-long rule that ended in 2000.

Some Peruvians credit Fujimori with defeating the nation's Maoist guerrillas, but others condemn him for permitting human rights abuses.
