Peru President Sets Date for Anti-corruption Referendum

Tuesday, 09 October 2018 03:38 PM EDT

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra has set a Dec. 9 date for a national referendum on anti-corruption measures.

One proposal would ban consecutive re-election of lawmakers. Another would ensure that only lawyers can be on a committee that selects judges and prosecutors.

Vizcarra has been promising efforts to clean up the political system. He took power in March after then President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski stepped down following accusations that he'd failed to disclose financial ties with a Brazilian construction company involved in Latin America's biggest graft scandal.

A recent series of covertly taped audios caught judges negotiating sentences for horrific crimes including the rape of a child.

If voters approve a proposal, it would take effect.
