MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities say an indigenous rights activist who founded a community radio station has been murdered in southern Mexico.
Presidential spokesman Jesús Ramírez Cuevas says via Twitter that Telésforo Santiago Enríquez was killed Thursday in San Agustín Loxicha in the state of Oaxaca.
The state prosecutor's office says Enríquez's body was found inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds.
The journalist advocate group Reporters without Borders said in a statement Friday that Enríquez worked to promote indigenous rights through the El Cafetal radio station. It says he was critical of the local government and had been threatened in February.
Mexico's National Human Rights Commission says Enríquez had publicly denounced municipal officials for the alleged diversion of public funds.
Ramírez said the federal government was committed to finding those responsible.
