Guatemala again Refuses to Readmit UN Graft Investigator

Tuesday, 25 September 2018 06:38 PM EDT

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Guatemala's government reiterated Tuesday that it is refusing to readmit the head of a U.N. commission investigating corruption in the country, including one pending case against President Jimmy Morales.

Vice President Jafeth Cabrera said a legal filing has been presented with the Constitutional Court and "for the time being he will not be allowed to enter" Guatemala.

It is the second time Morales' government has opted not to obey orders from the court to let commission chief Ivan Velasquez back in after he traveled to the United States on a work trip.

When Morales announced the ban in early September, he called Velasquez "a person who attacks order and public security."

Morales is suspected of receiving more than $1 million in illicit campaign financing. He denies the allegation.
