Ex-President Temer to Give Testimony in Brazil after Arrest

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian federal police are expecting to take the first testimony of ex-President Michel Temer since his arrest on corruption charges.

Police expect to take his testimony on Friday, along with that of his former Cabinet minister Moreira Franco, who was also in custody.

Temer, 78, was arrested Thursday as a result of the sprawling Car Wash corruption probe, which has ensnared several top politicians and businessmen in the South American country.

Lawyers for the former president consider his imprisonment illegal and have filed a request for his release.

Temer governed between 2016 and 2018 after his predecessor Dilma Rousseff was impeached.

His administration was clouded by corruption allegations, with Temer himself surviving two votes in Congress that would have suspended him from office and put him on trial.
