Brazil Prosecutor's Office Seeks Suspension of Gun Decree

Thursday, 16 May 2019 01:38 PM EDT

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's federal prosecutor's office has filed a lawsuit seeking to suspend a presidential decree loosening gun and ammunition legislation.

The prosecutor's office said Wednesday it asked for the "immediate and integral suspension" of President Jair Bolsonaro's decree, which "leaves loopholes, or even directly contradicts what was guided by the law in effect."

A May 7 decree by Bolsonaro expanded Brazilians' ability to sell, access and carry firearms.

The prosecutor's case is the second major legal challenge against the overhaul.

Last week, the country's supreme court ruled that Bolsonaro needed to provide more information. The opposition had filed a petition saying that the decree marked an "abuse of regulatory power by the executive" and should have been passed by Congress.
