Lachlan Murdoch to Visit Israel This Week

By    |   Monday, 29 January 2024 10:01 AM EST

Media mogul Lachlan Murdoch, son of tycoon Rupert Murdoch, reportedly was heading to Israel on Monday for what was to have been a secret meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Times of Israel reported the younger scion, who took over his father's media empire in September, also was expected to meet with National Unity Party leader Benny Gantz on Monday.

Murdoch's hush-hush trip was made in a private plane, the outlet reported, and aside from the sit-down with Netanyahu — which was confirmed by the Prime Minister's Office, the outlet reported — no other specifics of the journey were revealed.

Lachlan Murdoch serves as the executive chair of a massive media empire that includes Fox Corporation and News Corp., publishers of the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, The Sun, The Times, and News Corp Australia. He also serves as executive chair of Australian media company NOVA Entertainment.

The younger Murdoch's net worth is estimated to be $3.3 billion, coming partly from an investment made independent of his father and News Corp., according to the Times of Israel.

The trip was originally planned for several weeks ago and was to include Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. The agenda was the same: to meet with Netanyahu and Gantz, the outlet reported.

The relationship between Netanyahu and Murdoch family goes back years, the Times of Israel noted. In 2016, the Hebrew business daily The Marker reported Netanyahu's then-media adviser Nir Hefetz was looking into establishing a conservative television channel in Israel modeled after Fox News, and was interested in finding partners for the project, including Rupert Murdoch.

During 2017 investigations into charges against Netanyahu of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, former Ynet editor Eran Tiefenbrunn told police that after leaving Ynet, he traveled to London to hold an exploratory meeting with Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch regarding a possible investment in a conservative media outlet in Israel, the Times of Israel reported — adding Netanyahu and Tiefenbrunn held a meeting on the same subject.

In October 2016, Lachlan Murdoch also went to Israel for a secret meeting with Netanyahu, Hebrew daily Haaretz reported at the time.

According to the Times of Israel, Netanyahu once tried to persuade Lachlan Murdoch to buy the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, and that Netanyahu had previously said he aimed to make the Israeli media "more diverse."
