King Charles to Visit D.C., Address Congress

By    |   Tuesday, 24 March 2026 01:45 PM EDT

England's King Charles III is expected to make his first official state visit to Washington next month, with plans to address a joint meeting of Congress during the week of April 27, according to sources familiar with the arrangements.

The visit, first reported by Punchbowl News, would mark the first time a British monarch has addressed Congress since 1991, when Queen Elizabeth II spoke before a packed House chamber.

The trip comes as part of celebrations surrounding America's 250th anniversary. President Donald Trump visited London in September, and House Speaker Mike Johnson traveled there in January, becoming the first speaker to address the British Parliament.

While details are still being finalized, the White House is expected to formally announce the visit this week. Plans include a state dinner in honor of the king, and lawmakers have adjusted the House schedule to ensure members are in session for his expected remarks.

Charles' visit also comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, as Trump has pressed U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer for support in the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. Starmer has so far distanced the U.K. from involvement, saying, "This is not our war."
