Iran Claims Strikes on Mossad Headquarters

By    |   Tuesday, 16 January 2024 10:06 AM EST

Iran took responsibility Tuesday for the combined attack in northern Syria and Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, and also claimed it attacked the Mossad headquarters in the Kurdish region of Iraq.

According to Iran, it bombed the headquarters in response to "Israel's crimes against Iran, including the assassination of senior officials in the organization."

The Lebanese al-Mayadeen news channel reported that the ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards Syria were aimed at the areas controlled by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an al-Qaida affiliate that has operated in Syria in the past, in the Idlib province in the northwest part of the country.

The Iraqi Al-Ahad channel reported that the American Patriot batteries failed to intercept the missile and the UAV attack in Erbil, following the report on the Al-Arabi channel about damage to the buildings near the American diplomatic mission in the city.

Later, two U.S. security sources told the Reuters news agency that no harm was caused to any U.S. facility or personnel.

According to reports, at least four people were killed in the attack in the Kurdish capital.

The Kurdistan 24 channel quoted a source in one of the Kurdish factions who claimed the attack was responsible for the death of Peshraw Dizayee, a Kurdish businessman and manager of a local real estate company with close ties to the Iraqi government.

According to the report, four other members of his family were killed along with Dizayee.
