A mysterious illness that sickened U.S. diplomats in Cuba reportedly has also affected American travelers who stayed at two hotels in Havana.
In a statement on its website, the State Department advised Americans to avoid the Hotel Nacional and Hotel Capri — and to see a doctor if they think they were subjected to the same attacks that targeted diplomats, The Hill reported.
"Affected individuals have exhibited a range of physical symptoms including ear complaints and hearing loss, dizziness, headache, fatigue, cognitive issues, and difficulty sleeping," the statement said.
"If you believe you have suffered any of these symptoms following stays in Cuba, please consult a medical professional," the statement said, adding: "The U.S. government has imposed limitations on lodging at affected hotels."
According to Reuters, the State Department has received a "handful" of reports from private U.S. citizens who traveled to Cuba who say they have experienced symptoms similar to those suffered by American diplomats in the mysterious attacks.
The official, who would only be described as an unnamed "State Department spokesperson," told Reuters the U.S. government "cannot verify the claims."
The State Department issued a travel warning urging Americans to stay away from Cuba because of unexplained health "attacks" affecting at least 22 diplomatic personnel.
On Tuesday, the administration expelled 15 Cuban diplomats to protest Cuba’s failure to protect staff at the U.S. embassy; it came days after Washington recalled more than half the U.S. diplomatic personnel from Havana.
