Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that China’s appointment to the United Nations Human Rights Council shows the organization’s “hypocrisy” because of the country’s history on human rights.
Steube, on “The National Report,” described China as “a country that certainly hasn’t been the standard-bearer for human rights,” adding that they’ve “actually been criticized by our own State Department, and former ambassadors, and former secretaries.
He said, “it’s just amazing to me that the UN would take China, who has a host, a long list of human rights violations, and put them actually on the human rights council. So, I think there’s a lot of hypocrisy there, and if we’re going to continue to be a part of the United Nations things like that need to be dealt with swiftly.”
He also said that Congress must focus on helping small businesses during the coronavirus outbreak, saying that the next relief bill they pass should focus on getting more money to small businesses.
“I would have supported just more money for the small business section of the PP [Paycheck Protection] loans, I certainly would have supported that with unanimous consent or a voice vote. I think if they do more than that, the things that Speaker Pelosi [House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.,] I think you’re going to have a lot of Republicans crying foul if you’re trying to pass something like that while we’re all gone” during the congressional recess.
