Evidence has surfaced that the number of Palestinians killed by the explosion at a hospital in northern Gaza was far lower than what is being claimed, according to an online intelligence monitor.
"European Intelligence Officials have stated that they so far have only seen Evidence which suggests that 10-50 Palestinians were Killed by the Explosion at Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital in Northern Gaza not the 500-800 which was being claimed by Palestinian Authorities," the monitor, OSINTdefender, posted on social media platform X, Thursday.
The service did not identify the intelligence officials who made the statement, or further details about the evidence they said points to a lower death toll from the explosion at the hospital, which happened on Tuesday.
An unclassified U.S. intelligence report that was seen by Reuters Thursday estimated the death toll from the blast as being "probably at the low end of the 100 to 300 spectrum" but said that assessment may grow.
Palestinian officials said 471 people were killed in the blast, with Gaza's health ministry blaming an Israeli air strike and Israel saying the blast was caused by a failed rocket launch by Hamas militants.
The unclassified reports said that "we judge that Israel was not responsible," basing its assessment on "available reporting, including intelligence, missile activity, and open-source video and images of the incident."
The report further said that the hospital suffered "only light structural damage" and that there was "no observable damage to the main hospital building and no impact craters."
