Israeli actress Gal Gadot has entered into a political fight in her home country to defend her close friend and fellow actress Rotem Sela, who was criticized by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, The Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday.
The controversy started when Sela slammed on Instagram Israel’s Culture Minister Miri Regev for saying that voting for the center-left Blue and White Party of Benny Gantz would result in a coalition with Arab parties, according to JTA.
“Dear God, there are also Arab citizens in this country,” Sela wrote. “When will anyone in this government tell the public that this is a country of all its citizens, and all people are born equal.”
Netanyahu responded on Instagram and Facebook to Sela, saying “Israel is not a state of all its citizens. According to the nation-state law we passed, Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people — and not anyone else."
The Israeli prime minister added that “Israel’s Arab citizens... have equal rights and the Likud government has invested more than any other government in the Arab population,” but insisted that a government including Arab parties would “undercut the state’s security.”
Gadot, who frequently vacations with Sela, entered into the controversy by backing up her friend, writing "Love thy neighbor as thyself. It's not an issue of Right or Left, Jew or Arab, secular or religious. It's an issue of dialogue. Of dialogue for peace, for equality, for tolerance between one another," according to The Jerusalem Post.
The star of “Wonder Woman” added that the "responsibility to grow hope and light for a better future for our children is on us. Rotem, my sister, you are an inspiration to us all."
