Turkey Strips Immunity from Lawmakers, Clears Way for Trials

Friday, 20 May 2016 09:04 AM EDT

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish lawmakers have approved a bill to amend the constitution, a move that paves the way for the trials of several pro-Kurdish and other legislators.

When parliament convened Friday in Ankara, more than two-thirds of the 550-seat assembly voted in favor of the government-backed bill.

It puts 138 lawmakers, the vast majority of them from two opposition parties, at risk of prosecution.
