Sunday, 04 November 2018 06:38 AM EST

MADRID (AP) — A jury in Spain has found a Brazilian man guilty of killing his aunt, uncle and two young cousins, after it ruled unanimously that the murders were premeditated.

The private Spanish news agency Europa Press reported that the jury on Saturday was not convinced by Patrick Nogueira's defense that he had stabbed his relatives because he was mentally disturbed and suffers from alcoholism. The trial was held in Guadalajara, near Madrid.

Nogueira's aunt and uncle were in their early forties and his cousins were 1 and 4 years old. Nogueira was 19 at the time of the 2016 slayings.

A witness testified that Nogueira took a selfie with the dismembered bodies, which he had chopped up and put into plastic garbage bags.

The gruesome case captured wide attention in Spain and Brazil.
