MADRID (AP) — Spanish officials say firefighters rescued two hungry and thirsty British walkers who were lost for five days in the Pyrenees mountains bordering Spain and France.

A Navarra regional government statement Wednesday said the unidentified man and woman from Cambridge, England were found Tuesday near Valcarlos town.

The pair told their rescuers they left the French town of Saint Jean de Pied de Port on Friday intending to walk 30 kilometers (20 miles) to the Spanish town of Roncesvalles, but got lost.

They soon ran out of food and water and drank from irrigation canals and animal troughs before they decided to try to summon help.

Firefighters located them after spotting a large cross shape they made on the ground with colorful pieces of clothing.
