Macedonian Lawmakers Gear up for Vote to Amend Constitution

Friday, 19 October 2018 04:39 AM EDT

SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) — Macedonia's parliament is resuming a debate on proposed constitutional changes to rename the country North Macedonia, changes that would allow it to join NATO following a deal with neighboring Greece.

It is unclear whether the left-led government will secure the two-thirds majority in the 120-seat house that is needed for the drafting of the constitutional amendments to begin.

The main conservative opposition VMRO party strongly opposes the deal with Greece, and has said it will not back the amendments. Without support from VMRO lawmakers, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev cannot start the constitutional changes, and has said that in that case he will call early elections.

Zaev said Thursday that "a miracle could (still) happen," with VMRO lawmakers changing their minds.

The vote could be held Friday or in coming days.
