Italy Working to Help Pakistani Christian Aasia Bibi in Blasphemy Case

ROME — Italy is working to help relocate the family of a Pakistani Christian woman who was acquitted after being sentenced to death for blasphemy as her husband warns their lives are in danger in Pakistan.

The Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it was coordinating with other countries to ensure the safety of Asia Bibi and her family.

The ministry says it is ready to act on whatever the Italian government might decide — an indication that asylum might be in the offing.

Separately, a lawmaker from German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party called for Germany to grant Bibi refuge.

Bibi was convicted in 2010 of insulting Islam's prophet. Pakistan's top court acquitted her last week. Protests by hard-line Islamists prompted the government to ban Bibi from traveling until her case is reviewed.
