Germany: Ex-Red Army Faction Suspects Linked to New Robbery

Tuesday, 05 July 2016 01:03 PM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — German prosecutors say DNA found at the scene of an armored car robbery last month suggests a likely link to two former members of the disbanded leftist Red Army Faction group.

Authorities said in January that three ex-members had been linked to two botched armored car robberies in northern Germany in 2015 after years in hiding, an apparent attempt to continue financing their life underground. After a similar attack on an armored car in the small town of Cremlingen June 25, officials investigated a possible link to the trio.

Lutz Gaebel, a spokesman for prosecutors in Verden, told news agency dpa Tuesday that DNA samples from the robbery matched two of the three, Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub.

The Red Army Faction was founded in 1970 and disbanded in 1998.
