German Union Scraps Strikes This Week at Lufthansa Unit

Monday, 31 October 2016 12:01 PM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — A union representing cabin crew has scrapped plans to stage two days of strikes this week at Lufthansa's budget unit, Eurowings, and is proposing to bring in an arbitrator who helped resolve a previous dispute.

The UFO union staged a 24-hour walkout at Eurowings on Thursday, forcing some 400 flight cancelations. It said at the time that it would call members out two days this week as well, but didn't specify which.

The union, which is seeking concessions on issues including pay, working conditions and pensions, said in a letter to management Monday that this week's strikes won't take place.

Instead, it proposed exploring a way forward with Matthias Platzeck, a former state governor who earlier this year arbitrated a long-running dispute between UFO and Lufthansa itself.
