PARIS (AP) — French President Francois Hollande is trying to quell the anger of judges and magistrates after reportedly accusing them of being cowardly.

The comments were published a book this week called "A President Shouldn't Say That..." which includes what the authors say were comments by Hollande in private conversations. The book also includes his unusually frank remarks on Islam, immigration and the president's girlfriend.

The remarks on judges raised concerns about political meddling in legal affairs and caused uproar throughout France's justice system, prompting high-level public rebukes of Hollande.

Hollande sent letters Friday to several judges and court groups, saying the comments "have no relation to the reality of my thoughts or with my line of action as president. ... I deeply regret what feels like a wound (to you)."
