Iran Air Cleared to Resume Flights to Europe

Thursday, 16 June 2016 01:00 PM EDT

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union has eased restrictions against Iran Air and is allowing most of its planes to resume flights to Europe.

EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc said Thursday that a successful "technical assessment" was carried out at Iran Air in May, weeks after she visited the country.

She said the EU can now "allow most aircraft from Iran Air back into European skies."

Iran's air safety record has been spotty, with parts nearly impossible to get for the country amid world sanctions over its nuclear program.

The EU move comes just months after Iran Air signed deals to buy new Airbus planes. It has also been considering deals with Boeing.

The signing of the nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran has allowed airline manufacturers back into the Iranian market.
