President Donald Trump is considering various policy options on gun reform so it would "make sense" for him to have spoken with National Rifle Association Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre, Marc Lotter, the director of strategic communications for the president's 2020 campaign, said Thursday.
Lotter told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" that he wasn't given any information "specifically" about Trump's phone call with LaPierre Tuesday, but said the president would "hear from all sides on these issues."
"Obviously on something like this, the NRA would have the communication and thoughts on those issues, so it makes sense that the president would hear from them as he is considering all options," he said.
The Washington Post reported Wednesday that LaPierre spoke with Trump to warn him that his supporters would not find his expressed support for background checks popular. Officials speaking anonymously with The Post also said LaPierre argued against the merits of a background check. The NRA opposes legislation sponsored by Sens. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.
Lotter said there is a "great appetite" to change gun laws, especially on "red flag" legislation, and that he thinks Trump is taking the right approach by listening to all sides.
"Any time we are not blaming anyone other than the shooter, we are doing ourselves a disservice," said Lotter, while decrying attacks being made on the president by political rivals, including those seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.
"This is absolutely shameful," he said. "The president is trying to bring our nation together. There are reports now coming out when the president was down on his knees so children could hug him while they were visiting hospitals...for them to take partisan shots on a day when we are trying to come together, it's just cheap."
